Join in Our Worship
In our Synagogue, everyone
sits together, men, women and children. Men and women participate as equals in
all aspects of the service. Services are usually conducted by one of our rabbis. Part of the service is read in English and part in Hebrew
so that everyone can follow the service. On the occasion of Bar or Bat Mitzvahs,
festivals or other special occasions, we have a mixed choir of synagogue members.
Mitzvot - lighting the candles, opening the ark, reading and so on - are carried
out by members and are arranged in advance.
Services
Held on Friday evenings at 8.30pm, except for the last Friday of the month at
6.30pm. These early Friday services are often conducted by Cheder classes, with
a guitar as musical accompaniment. More traditional Saturday morning services
commence at 11.00am but also during the year, we have 'Creative' Shabbat Family
Services in which the Cheder children participate.
Jewish Life Cycle
Both happy and sad events are commemorated at NPLS. A Baby Blessing enables the
proud parents to join with grandparents, family and friends to thank God for the
safe delivery of their child and to make a commitment to raise their child in
the Jewish faith.
Weddings in our Synagogue are an especially happy event. On the Shabbat before
the wedding, bride and groom stand before the Ark to be given a blessing (Aufruf).
The anniversary of the death of a loved one (Yahrzeit) is commemorated during
the service.
